Ghost touch or missed touches: compare repeatable patterns

Distinguish unwanted contacts from missed areas with a controlled touchscreen and multitouch check.

Identify what you see

Ghost touch describes input appearing without your intended contact. A missed touch is different: you make contact but the expected response is absent. Write down which happens and where. A browser test can only observe events delivered to its page.

Repeat with a clean, dry screen

Dry your hands and clean the screen gently. Keep the phone securely supported. Trace slowly through the touch grid, then repeat any missed cell from another direction. System edge gestures and fast movements can leave gaps without indicating damage.

Compare single and multiple contacts

Start with one finger, then try two in the multitouch pad. Keep contacts inside the pad. Check whether each marker follows its finger or disappears while contact is maintained. An observed maximum is not proof of the device’s contact limit.

Compare conditions one at a time

If practical, compare the behaviour with and without a case touching the edge, or while unplugged. Do not remove a bonded screen protector simply for this test. Compare the same physical area in the phone’s native interface. A symptom that follows one webpage is different from a repeatable issue across applications.

When the test cannot decide

Unwanted contacts may be intermittent and may not appear during a short session. Save what you actually observed, including the conditions, instead of treating a single clean run as a guarantee. Persistent uncontrolled input warrants a separate device assessment.
